Symantec Backup Exec 10d Named Editor's Choice
Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced that CMP Media LLC's Network Computing magazine has named Symantec Backup Exec 10d for Windows Servers its respected Editor's Choice for Continuous Data Protection. Backup Exec earned the distinction based on its comprehensiveness, manageability, and price. Symantec received the Editor's Choice award in the review -- outperforming key competitors in the continuous data protection space.
"With information and technology as the cornerstones of businesses today, the need for comprehensive, continuous data protection is a priority for our customers," said Jeremy Burton, senior vice president, enterprise security and data management, Symantec Corp. "Symantec is pleased to receive the magazine's Editor's Choice award for Backup Exec as the preferred CDP solution for Windows environments, and to be selected as the winner among a large group of competitive solutions."
Symantec Backup Exec 10d for Windows Servers is designed to utilize disk storage, delivering more reliable, faster, and more efficient true continuous data protection for Windows servers. Backup Exec 10d revolutionizes data protection by eliminating backup windows and introduced the industry's first Web-based file retrieval. Combined with its existing family of high performance agents and options to Microsoft Exchange, SQL, SharePoint Portal Server, and other database application data, as well as Linux/UNIX server data and desktops and laptops, Backup Exec 10d delivers the only comprehensive disk and tape based solution.
"Symantec's Backup Exec 10d wins our Editor's Choice award, thanks to good overall support for file system CDP, excellent backup data management, integration with Backup Exec's standard backup functions, and an amazing price," editors concluded.
According to editors, Backup Exec was one of the easiest products to set up and use, with a clear install process and user interface. In addition, at start-up, the Backup Exec install CD tests its environment, which saves time and streamlines installation and setup. Task wizards are included to not only simplify installation and setup but also to ease backup, recovery, media management, disaster preparation, cluster installation, and agent configuration.
Editors also singled out Backup Exec for its ability to continuously move data to a backup server and then use Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to create snapshots on the protection server to preserve file versions. Backup Exec supports up to 64 snapshots for each destination, enabling the highest degree of protection. Editors noted that with Backup Exec, they could define when to take snapshots -- as many as one per hour -- and what snapshots to retain, collapse, and store. This functionality allows users to prioritize the data backed up, ensuring that the most critical information is available at all times.
