StoreAge Ports Data Snapshot, Replication, Mirroring, And Migration Solutions To McDATA Intelligent Switch Platform
StoreAge Networking Technologies, an innovator in enterprise SAN storage management, today announced that it will demonstrate its data snapshot, replication and migration solutions for use on the McDATA Intelligent fibre channel switches. The initial demonstration will be on McDATA's Sphereon Intelligent switch product. With StoreAge's multiView, multiCopy, and multiMirror applications running on the McDATA switch, customers can centrally deploy a common, robust storage management software suite for all of the various storage devices within their storage area network. Using this heterogeneous software suite, customers can create a single set of data storage policies and procedures that can remain constant regardless of the underlying storage devices, allowing true hardware independence.
Advantages of Running Business Continuity Applications in the FC Switch
The primary advantage of switch-based business continuity applications is the ability to protect all storage on the SAN, regardless of host operating system or storage device.
By using multiView, multiCopy and multiMirror on the McDATA Intelligent switch platforms, customers can enhance the continuity of their businesses by:
- Eliminating backup windows by using instant, read/write, low-capacity snapshots to backup data to either disk or tape without disrupting production applications
- Rapidly restoring data from disk to previous points-in-time, minimizing both system downtime and data loss
- Accelerating application testing and reducing post-deployment errors and support costs by testing with instantly available copies of production data
- Migrating live data from any device, to any device, at any location, while production applications remain online and fully available
- Any-to-any (heterogeneous) mirroring of data over long distances to off-site locations for business continuity and disaster recovery
In addition, since all of the above functions take place within the fibre channel fabric, these processes are offloaded from both servers and storage devices, thereby improving performance and making storage management a centralized function.
"Deploying StoreAge's SAN-wide data replication and data movement capabilities with intelligent switches provides enhanced manageability for customers with fast-growing and increasingly heterogeneous storage environments," said Mark Spowart, president of StoreAge. "These solutions deliver a uniform, centralized, fabric-based method for data replication, migration and remote mirroring regardless of the operating systems or storage devices in use."
"Customers will appreciate the performance, utility and economy of accelerating business continuity applications with the fibre channel switch," noted Mike Gustafson, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, McDATA. "Coupled with McDATA's intelligent switch platform, the StoreAge software applications provide incredibly robust and secure data protection."
About StoreAge multiView, multiCopy and multiMirror
multiView creates instant, read/write, reduced-capacity snapshots (logical copies) of any volume on any storage device in a SAN. Each snapshot is a fraction of the size of the original volume, and may be mounted by any host on the SAN for any purpose, such as zero-downtime backup and rapid online restores.
multiCopy creates instantly available, read/write, physical copies of any volume on any storage device in a SAN, enabling data to be seamlessly copied, moved and re-purposed for tasks such as data migration and application testing, while leaving production servers uninvolved in the data replication and movement process.
multiMirror is an innovative copy facility that enables the creation of multiple physical copies of volumes, regardless of storage subsystems and SAN components. Each copy is independently accessible and instantly available, allowing production servers to access data while the copy operation is in process.
