Storage Management: Converium Tackles Data Growth With NetApp Storage For Microsoft Exchange 2007

Network Appliance, a leading provider of storage and data management solutions, has expanded its relationship with Converium, an independent international multi-line reinsurer known for its innovation, professionalism, and service. The Swiss company once again chose NetApp storage when presented with a storage challenge, this time to migrate from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange 2007. When weighing the available options, high reliability and efficient data management made NetApp SnapManager for Exchange the clear choice. With NetApp deployed, Converium can easily manage Exchange services and back up and recover data in just a few minutes.

SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange automates and simplifies the complex, manual, and time-consuming processes associated with the backup, recovery, and verification of Exchange databases. Converium will integrate Exchange seamlessly as a new business application into the NetApp backup and disaster recovery scenario. Fast Snapshot copies will complement the online backup, regularly mirroring between Converium in Zurich and the Cologne office.

"Exchange is an absolutely mission-critical application for Converium and we naturally looked to NetApp storage for the solution," said Marc Eggenberger, manager of IT Systems at Converium. "SnapManager for Exchange not only simplifies the storage integration with Exchange 2007 but also the ongoing management. Single e-mails, entire mailboxes, and volumes or even just one particular attachment can be recovered from backups in one easy step. International compliance regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, mean that the data we are required to keep, including e-mails, grows over 80% annually. The NetApp on-the-fly scalability and flexible volumes are therefore very important for constant data service."

Converium, headquartered in Zurich and with 15 international offices, wrote close to $2B in gross reinsurance premiums in 2006. The company has been a NetApp customer for some time and consolidates its mainly Windows-based data infrastructure, including applications such as SAP, file services, SQL Server, and now Exchange, on NetApp storage. Converium's central data platform is a NetApp FAS6070 high-end cluster with a 50-terabyte capacity.
