Overview
Infortrend's highly acclaimed SCSI-to-SCSI SentinelRAID 170 (SR
170) controller is designed to meet the high availability, high
performance, and stringent fault tolerant requirements placed on
RAID controllers operating in today's most extreme storage environments.
The SR 170 controller leverages RAID technology, providing a host system with high-speed, fault-tolerant disk storage. The SR 170 controller is an ideal solution for weaving a wide range of multiple hot-swappable, high-performance, industry-standard SCSI-320 hard drives into one or more contiguous volumes, as well as enhancing storage availability, integrity, and performance.
With high-speed SDRAM modules and firmware in flash memory, a state-of-the-art 400MHz CPU performs all RAID functions on the SR 170 controller and supports RAID 0, 1 (0+1), 3, 5, 10, 30, 50, or JBOD RAID storage on any host system equipped with a SCSI-320 interface. The controller's operation is completely independent of the host operating system.
Four VHDCI SCSI connectors at the back of the controller board facilitate the connection of the four SCSI-320 I/O channels to external hosts and drives. All of the I/O channels can be configured as either host or drive.
An optional, easily installed, separately purchased daughter board can be used to increase the number of available SCSI-320 I/O channels from four to eight. The additional four I/O channels can also be configured as drive or host channels.
The SR 170 controller provides superior performance, extreme reliability and exceptional data availability. The controller is encased in a highly accessible, 5.25”, half-height chassis designed to endure the extreme physical stresses placed on RAID controllers in even the harshest RAID storage environments.
Architecture
Based on architecture designed to support the most demanding applications,
the controller is capable of very high levels of performance. Its
64-bit separate-bus backbone is built around dedicated XOR engines
running at twice the data bus speed. The calculation of parity and
distribution of data can be optimized with the free association
between individual logical arrays and different optimization settings.
High Performance
Featuring a 64-bit, 133MHz memory bus, the unparalleled bandwidth
makes the controller's high data throughput more than sufficient
for small-to-medium- sized servers or workstations. Data can be
distributed at a burst rate up to 1066MBps. The dual-independent
PCI bus design virtually eliminates all imminent bottlenecks on
I/O traffic, providing sufficient throughput for a wide range of
applications on workstations, Windows 2000/NT/XP-, Linux-, or Unix-based
servers. These applications include disk-to-disk backup, video-on-demand,
CCTV, stream editing, and others.
