Optical Archive Technology: QStar HSM Completes Qualification With Symantec's VERITAS NetBackup 6.0 For Support Of Optical Archive Technology
QStar Technologies, Inc., a global leader in compliance, archiving and data protection solutions, today announced that it has achieved qualification of its HSM archive management software with VERITAS NetBackup 6.0 software through the Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP). QStar HSM expands support for the already flexible data protection solution by adding archive media connectivity such as UDO (Ultra Density Optical), Blu-ray Disc and DVD for UNIX, Windows® and Linux platforms. The flexibility and scalability of QStar are ideal for the large-scale, multiple platform environments in which NetBackup customers already operate.
QStar, a leading provider of archive storage management software, now offers archive media support for companies protecting data with NetBackup solutions. QStar provides the archive media connectivity while Symantec provides the automated data movement, with transparent access for users and applications.
"With this announcement, QStar is continuing to bring real value in the form of hype-free and common- sense hierarchical storage management to the distributed computing environment," says Jon Toigo, Managing Partner of Toigo Partners International and well-known industry watchdog and consumer advocate. "Leveraging solidly performing technologies like optical for long term data retention, QStar is building enormous value into otherwise trendy and hypothetical storage architectures. Their contribution to NetBackup is elegant and straightforward – reminiscent of mainframe HSM approaches – and it makes sense especially in shops that confront big regulatory requirements with shrinking budgets."
"We are pleased to be accepted as a STEP partner and to provide an integrated archive solution with Symantec," said Riccardo Finotti, President and CEO, QStar Technologies Inc. "The combined products allow customers to manage archives utilizing write- once optical technologies while maintaining transparent user and application access to data. The solution is focused on meeting the compliance, data recovery and delivering technologies that today's enterprise customer demands."
"The archive capability added by QStar is significant because it offers enhanced functionality by combining the power of NetBackup with the archive media support of QStar for all major operating systems," said Raja Srinivasan, senior manager, Symantec Technology Enabled Program.
QStar HSM is an easy to implement software solution for managing storage devices under in a UNIX, Windows or Linux system environment. HSM is designed to use high-speed storage devices, such as disk arrays, as a cache and move data automatically to less expensive, slower, removable storage devices, such as optical discs. HSM integrates seamlessly with NetBackup and leverages the disk staging functionality, so a user can maintain a very short backup window by writing to the QStar disk cache, then in the background, data can be archived off to removable WORM media, providing both a fast file-level restore and secure long-term data retention by adding an optical device to the solution. The resulting solution is a Disk-2-Disk-2-Optical solution.
Designed for enterprise-wide deployment, Symantec's VERITAS NetBackup 6.0 delivers high-performance data protection that scales to protect the largest UNIX, Windows, and Linux environments. With complete protection from the desktop to the data center, NetBackup offers a single console for management of all backup and recovery operations. Together with QStar, NetBackup can also manage removable WORM optical drives and libraries, helping companies meet the stringent industry regulatory requirements for long-term, revision secure backup and archive.
