Dartmouth College Selects LANDesk Management Suite And LANDesk Security Suite

LANDesk Software, a leading provider of integrated systems and security management solutions, today announced that Dartmouth College has implemented LANDesk Management Suite and LANDesk Security Suite over competing solutions to help their IT organization better manage the college's more than 9,000 PCs in use campus wide.

Dartmouth College is an Ivy League school that had more than 4,000 undergraduates enrolled for the 2004/2005 school year. The IT department at Dartmouth connects all computers both on and off campus using a high-speed computer network. Being able to manage these computers and ensure security in an increasingly threatening IT environment required the IT staff to seek out a solution that would protect its environment in real-time.

According to a recent IDC Case Study on Dartmouth, "the need for increased security has driven the awareness of patch management higher on the list for IT enterprises, especially those dealing with increasingly mobile and remote populations."

With students and faculty becoming more mobile it is essential for colleges to implement a successful tool to combat increasing security threats and secure even the most remote IT environments. Timothy Chiacchira, enterprise administrator for Dartmouth College, decided to take a proactive approach to securing his environment by successfully implementing LANDesk solutions.

Chiacchira and the IT staff at Dartmouth tested different software product suites, but key features designed to enhance security and IT standards compliance offered only from LANDesk solidified the purchasing decision. The key features include:

  • Real-time antivirus monitoring and the ability to maintain control with standard, custom and high-frequency scans.
  • Ability to continually manage file pattern updates for security compliance.
  • Ability to protect systems in real-time with access to LANDesk's comprehensive database of known spyware, adware, Trojans, key-loggers and other malware.
Since implementation the campus has started to win the fight against vulnerabilities. Chiacchira said that on the first day of implementation using LANDesk Security Suite, Dartmouth was able to successfully download 3,906 patches onto 708 student machines.

According to IDC, LANDesk "helps eliminate the manual patching process when a new malicious code attack occurs, and in the recent slew of computer worms, the Dartmouth College IT network experienced no downtime."

"With LANDesk, enterprises proactively manage, update and protect IT systems through a single console," said Dave R. Taylor, vice president of worldwide marketing for LANDesk. "Enterprises are empowered with the tools needed to increase efficiency. LANDesk solutions have allowed Dartmouth to implement compliance procedures and make an otherwise vulnerable amorphous environment an environment where machines are successfully monitored and patched to reduce threats."

LANDesk Management Suite and LANDesk Security Suite are designed to give enterprises the needed tools to easily, effectively and efficiently manage all its clients systems and actively provide endpoint security management. In August, LANDesk further extended its innovative approach to systems and security management with the launch of its product version 8.6. With this release, LANDesk delivered the first software tool capable of performing systems management over the Internet, thereby saving enterprises the expense of a dedicated leased line or VPN solution.
