Avamar Integrates Axion With EMC Centera Content Addressed Storage (CAS)
Avamar Technologies, Inc. a leading provider of innovative data protection software, today announced the release of Avamar Archive Manager. Avamar Archive Manager provides fully automated, policy-based integration between Avamar Axion and EMC Centera.
With Avamar's highly efficient Axion software, enterprises can cost effectively store years' worth of archives on disk storage and automatically protect data stored in remote branch offices across the WAN. EMC Centera provides enterprises with a highly scalable, compliant repository for data archives, leveraging single-instance-store technology for efficient use of disk storage. Avamar Archive Manager with support for EMC Centera provides enterprises with the most efficient, end-to-end solution for data backup, recovery, and archive on disk storage, all of which can be easily and quickly searched to meet compliance requirements or legal discovery requests.
As part of the new product release, Avamar has become an EMC CAS Technology Partner. Mark Avery, EMC Senior Director, Centera Markets and Alliances, said, "The integration between EMC Centera and Avamar Axion addresses some of the most pressing storage challenges of our joint customers, while lowering their costs and improving service levels throughout the information lifecycle. The Axion/Centera solution efficiently protects enterprise data, creating a consolidated information store that enterprises can leverage with critical applications like full text and metadata search."
The Avamar Archive Manager with support for EMC Centera was designed to solve the many challenges enterprises face managing backup, replication, restore, and archive. EMC Centera provides a simple, scalable, and secure storage solution for cost-effective retention, protection, and disposition of a wide range of fixed content. With its tremendous efficiency -- up to 99.7% data reduction on a daily basis -- Avamar Axion can automatically protect data both in corporate data centers and in remote sites over the WAN, creating a central repository of data backups, which can then be archived to Centera, while preserving storage efficiency across the two platforms.
More importantly, Avamar provides rich, secure access to data backups and archives stored in both Axion and Centera through the Avamar File System (AvFS). With AvFS, Avamar can provide a file system view of data archives to certified applications, such as Fast Search & Transfer (FAST) or Google. "Traditional backups on tape media often end with data literally buried beneath a mountain," said Ed Walsh, CEO of Avamar. "With the Avamar Archive Manager and its tight integration between Axion and Centera, customers can now Google their data -- they can easily find the critical files and information assets they need to drive productivity, meet regulatory requirements, or respond to legal discovery requests."
By automating data backup and archive, and reducing the risk of "silent" data loss due to loss or corruption of tapes, enterprises can save money, while keeping all of their backups and archives available on online disk storage. "Avamar has quickly emerged as one of the more compelling and innovative enterprise-class data protection offerings in the market," said Brad O'Neill, Senior Analyst with the Taneja Group. "The integration of these two solutions changes the cost dynamic for enterprises, allowing them to keep years of data online and searchable for quick recovery or to respond to litigation. This kind of cost-conscious flexibility is exactly what enterprise end-users are demanding."
