Adaptec Strengthens External Storage Product Line With Two Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Storage Subsystems

Source: Adaptec, Inc.

Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, today announced two new Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) external storage subsystems to deliver a simple transition to higher performing, more scalable SAS deployments. The Adaptec SANbloc 5000f RAID subsystem and SANbloc S50 JBOD are cost effective, high performance solutions for the storage of transaction and reference data as well as applications with intensive throughput requirements. These subsystems are among the first on the market that support the deployment of SAS in both direct attached and networked storage environments, which allows IT environments to tailor storage to their unique application.

SAS is the next generation SCSI interface that delivers significant improvements in scalability, performance, reliability, and flexibility over parallel SCSI by leveraging a serial architecture for data transport. The Adaptec SANbloc 5000f RAID subsystem and SANbloc S50 JBOD announced today are built on the Adaptec universal chassis system design and support both SAS and SATA drives to meet either high performance and/or low cost requirements. With fault tolerant, redundant technologies, including hot swappable power and cooling, controller modules, and hard drives, these systems deliver highly reliable direct attached and networked storage expansion up to 54TB at a cost effective price point.

"Customers are demanding high-performance solutions that provide predictable, ongoing reductions in cost, and we believe SAS will play a critical role in the next generation of storage systems technology," said Brad Nisbet, Program Manager, IDC Storage Systems. "With a host of new internal and external SAS products, Adaptec is clearly committed to helping customers transition to this new technology."

"The Adaptec SANbloc 5000f RAID subsystem and SANbloc S50 JBOD are valuable additions to our external storage product line by providing price/performance flexibility for customers who want to leverage the benefits of SAS in their existing infrastructures," said Vic Jipson, vice president and general manager of the Adaptec Storage Solutions group. "As always, Adaptec is committed to providing trusted reliability through the delivery of interoperable SAS products that are supported by global customer support, training and education programs designed to ease the industry transition to SAS."

Adaptec SAS Subsystems
The Adaptec SANbloc 5000f RAID subsystem is a Fibre Channel-to-SAS external storage solution for direct attached storage or storage area networks. It can be easily integrated into an existing Fibre Channel network to meet growing needs for cost-effective data storage. It offers a high performance I/O module in a dense 2U, 12-drive system that can be populated with SAS drives for highly reliable, primary storage or SATA drives for cost effective capacity or a combination of the two. The SANbloc 5000f offers extensive scalability with the addition of the SANbloc S50 JBOD, providing expansion opportunity of 8 additional systems (total of 108 hard drives) for a capacity up to 54TB (SATA) or 32.4TB (SAS). A variety of RAID levels (0, 1, 10, 5, 50) provide data protection options with value added software for easy management including RAID Level Migration, Online Capacity Expansion, snapshot, and Adaptec Storage Manager™. It offers support for industry software standards such as SMI-S and Microsoft VDS. The Adaptec SANbloc 5000f will be available through distribution to resellers before the end of the year at a Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $5,995 without drives.

The Adaptec SANbloc S50 JBOD is a high performance SAS-to-SAS JBOD for direct attached storage, host based RAID, or expansion behind the Adaptec SANbloc 5000f. It offers a high performance I/O module in a 2U, 12-drive system that can be populated with either SAS or SATA drives. The Adaptec S50 will be available through distribution to resellers before the end of November at an MSRP of $2,995 without drives.

The Adaptec SANbloc 5000f subsystem and Adaptec SANbloc S50 JBOD complement the Adaptec internal SAS storage product family also announced today (see related release titled "Adaptec Announces Industry's Broadest Family of Internal SAS Storage Solutions").

Adaptec Enabling SAS Support Ecosystem
In an effort to enable a seamless migration to SAS for its customers and reseller partners, Adaptec has established an infrastructure of SAS support programs. These programs include introductory SAS tutorials, certified technical training courses, an online SAS education center, storage advisor weblog, bundled SAS product evaluation and starter kits for resellers and end users, and the Adaptec Trusted SAS Compatibility Lab for multi-vendor testing of interoperability between Adaptec and 3rd party SAS products. Free, useful tools are also available from Adaptec including the "Make the Right Connections" cable guide and poster that illustrates the proper use of SAS cables.
