Case Study: Utah State University Makes The Grade In Disaster Recovery For Microsoft Exchange Environments
By InMage
Utah State University (USU) is one of the nation's premier student-centered land-grand and space-grant universities. Founded in 1888, USU is nationally and internationally recognized for its intellectual and technological leadership in land, water, space, and life enhancement. The university's seven colleges and 850 faculty members provide education for more than 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students through a state-wide multi-campus system.
The Challenge: Exchange Redundancy for Disaster Recovery
Utah State's Offi ce of Information Technology is responsible for setting a vision and developing strategies in the area of information technology. This includes the planning and installation of IT applications in support of USU's teaching, research and outreach missions. The university's data center is located on its main campus in Logan and houses over 270 servers, many of which are virtualized using VMware. USU utilizes a mix of Windows, Linux, Sun Solaris and Mac OS operating platforms.
Microsoft® Exchange® comprises a signifi cant portion of the university's infrastructure, encompassing e-mail and calendar applications for over 8,000 individual users. Utah State collectively receives approximately 10 million e-mail messages daily, or about 72 million e-mails per week. After fi ltering out spam and other unsolicited e-mails, 500,000 e-mails per week are headed toward the Exchange environment.
