Data deduplication has been a viable IT strategy for managing data for some time; in fact, it has become a basic IT assumption. Typically used as a backup cure-all, many organizations are quickly discovering that deduplication alone isn't enough.

Data has exploded in past years and is continuing to grow exponentially. Most organizations are still deploying technology that was designed when a server hard drive was 100 MB, yet a typical backup environment now moves terabytes of data daily. That creates an enormous stress on the backup process: at the server, across the network and at the target.
