Cloud computing is one of the most talked-about trends in IT, and the market for cloud services is exploding. In fact, IDC says cloud computing was a $17.4B market in 2009, but is expected to grow to $44.2B in 2013.

One segment of the cloud computing market that is particularly fast-growing is cloud-based disaster recovery (DR). This approach is appealing for two reasons. First, by definition cloud computing implies that the workload in question is running somewhere else – and this is one of the major tenets of any serious recovery plan. Secondly, it shifts the cost of the secondary facility (sometimes the most expensive aspect of disaster recovery) to someone else's budget.
