Guest Column: The C-4 Era Is Here

Checking in with both large and small companies today, I am finding that four IT-related issues have been elevated to the front office, where business managers and directors live. For convenience, these issues can be summarized as cost containment, compliance, continuity, and carbon footprint reduction (green IT), or, collectively, as "C-4."
Sometimes, continuity is subsumed under the rubric of compliance, as many regulations and laws require data protection and preservation as part of their mandate. Similarly, carbon footprint may actually fall into the category of cost containment, since accelerating power costs — rather than eco-consciousness — is often the rationale for greening infrastructure these days.
Still, C-4 has a nice ring to it. Plus, it is an apt double entendre. In a lot of shops, where the frustration surrounding these issues is palatable, there often manifests a desire just to make the problems go away. To quote Scott Adams, "There is no problem that cannot be resolved given a suitable application of high explosives." This is, of course, another meaning of C-4.
