White Paper: New Technologies For Remote Office Consolidation

Information in the form of electronic data is the lifeblood of modern business. For decades, companies have been struggling to manage their data assets, preserve the integrity of their business information, and ensure high availability of data for mission-critical business applications. For most companies, the initial focus of data management has been the corporate data center. Housing the company's most essential business application servers and data storage equipment, the data center has been the crucible for forging new IT technologies, including server clusters, blade servers, server virtualization and storage area networking. Today, customers have a wide range of products and services for consolidating their centralized data assets, providing data backup and preservation and implementing high availability data access.

While server consolidation and SAN technology have helped customers streamline processes and reduce costs within the data center, the bulk of data assets of most companies is outside the data center, dispersed in remote offices and regional sites. According to some analysts, up to 75% of corporate data resides in remote locations. The majority of that remote data is stored on remote storage arrays for servers hosting productivity applications and email. Recent regulatory requirements have highlighted the cost and difficulty of securing, protecting and retrieving this data. Further, these remote offices often lack the technical skill sets and rigorous processes pioneered in data center environments to provide adequate data protection. Consequently, even companies that have made significant investments in their data centers have been unable to guarantee data accessibility and preservation of all corporate data assets. With so much business information in a vulnerable state, companies may be unable to meet regulatory compliance for customer data or provide business continuity in the event of social or natural disruptions.

In this paper, we will examine the challenges IT administrators face in protecting data access and the integrity of geographically dispersed data assets, the technical parameters that have inhibited previous solutions, and some of the new technologies for remote office data consolidation. These new technologies now make it possible to extend the safeguards and reliability of the data center throughout the enterprise and bring dispersed data under control.
