In the last two installments of this column arc covering cost containment, I looked at the need to (1) "purpose-build" storage infrastructure and to (2) make it manageable by fewer hands in order to attack both the CAPEX and OPEX cost components of contemporary data storage. I argued that stovepipe storage arrays, featuring lots of embedded "value-add" software, combined with flaky plumbing standards (ANSI Fibre Channel standards, for example) were creating massive inefficiency in capacity allocation and paving the way for a data disaster.
These conditions need to be strategically addressed via a combination of hardware deconstruction and management automation. But that is not the full story.
