For years the data protection industry has abused the phrase "Your data is increasing exponentially" and used this catchy tagline as a way to sell new products and to remind IT professionals about something they are already well aware of. Using this tagline to get people's attention, new technologies are continually being introduced that promise to solve problems of increasing amounts of data while reducing total cost of ownership and improving ROI. It seems that every few years a new technology comes out that is positioned as a way to do all these things and more, however, most of these technologies tend to miss their mark.

As data has increased, most IT professionals responsible for backing up data have looked to disk based backup solutions to backup more data faster. Faster backup/restore, larger capacities, reliability and affordability have been key drivers for backup administrators as they have shifted their data from traditional tape backup to technologies and products that use disk as their backup target. While disk technologies such as NAS, SAN, JBOD and most recently VTL and De-duplication offer larger capacities and faster transfer rates, they fall short when it comes to offering a means of backing up data so it can be physically stored offsite. Unless they rely on remote backup or costly replication products, most disk to disk backup solutions are simply designed for backing up data faster and storing that data in an array, thus still requiring tape or replication to physically backup data and send that data offsite.
