De-Duplication And Storage Economics
By Chris Santilli, COPAN Systems
Data storage, like any technology, is often ignored for long periods of time and then suddenly thrust into the spotlight when the needs of IT change. These days, with data retention requirements on the rise, power and cooling costs under scrutiny, and many enterprise data centers nearing critical – even overload – capacity, the importance of economically viable data storage is a hot topic. And the question of storage economics – how to be sure your data storage system is delivering efficiency on every front – is one that many CTOs, CFOs and IT managers are wrestling with every day.
Storage economics used to be considered a relatively simple equation: All you needed to know was how many gigabytes of information you could store per dollar, and it was easy to compare systems on that cost-per-gigabyte basis. Accordingly, many organizations opted to offload data to tape, where it could be kept for a relatively long period of time without doing much harm to the bottom line.
But more and more, storage economics have become complicated – and the larger the enterprise, the more complex they've become. Not only has data itself grown explosively in the past several years – to the point where growth rates at many companies are 70% to 120% annually – but external forces such as legal requirements and energy costs, and internal requirements such as conservation goals, security, and data recovery, have also impacted IT's goals. Suddenly, businesses that want to deliver timely access, strong service level agreements, and reliable data security need to take a lot more into account than simply the cost of putting a gig onto some kind of media.
