Being involved in the radiology industry, government compliance and good business practices mandate that Next Generation Radiology needed to have a solid backup and disaster recovery program. Their DR plan needed to address fully backing up all imaging and corporate data at multiple sites as well as taking care of offsite requirements and storing data in geographically dispersed locations in case of disaster.

Dan Castaldo, IT Director for Next Generation Radiology, was responsible for backing up all of the data at their 4 locations in New York. Dan had an existing backup and disaster recovery plan in place that was adequate, however with increasing HIPPA regulatory compliance and increasing amounts of medical imaging data, Dan had decided to completely revamp their backup architecture in order to accommodate their current and future needs.

Next Generation Radiology implemented the Idealstor 8 Bay Backup Appliance and Ibac Data Protection Software to backup their medical imaging servers and other critical data. Dan Castaldo implemented the 8 Bay because it could allow him to easily backup his current amount of data while giving him plenty of capacity for future growth. The Idealstor 8 Bay is a Windows server that becomes the host for a clients backup software and allows backups to be run to the Idealstor removable drives. Dan is currently using 3 of the Idealstor 300GB drives to backup his data and as that data increases, he can simply add more drives to the system and configure his jobs to utilize the new drives. The 8 Bay can backup 3.2TB native allowing him ample room for future growth. The 8 Bay allows Dan to backup his data and remove the drives for his offsite requirements as well as leave some of the data in the system for near line access to his backup data. NGR is also in the process of upgrading their NT servers to Windows 2003 and is using a combination of Ibac Data Protection Software and their Legacy software to backup their data. The eventual plan is migrate all of their data to Ibac.

Dan uses Ibac Data Protection Software from Idealstor to backup the majority of his data. Ibac is high speed backup software that backs up data in its native format and allows incremental backups to be merged with the most recent full backup. After running the initial backup of all his data, Dan runs incremental backups onto the Idealstor drives. Dan configured his backup job to only backup the changed files and merge those changes into his last full backup so even when he runs an incremental backup, the end result is a full backup. Even over a 10/100 network, Dan realized a vast improvement over his prior method using Veritas Backup Exec.
